The P-40 is armed with six free-firing .50-cal. machine guns, three in each wing. Each gun must be charged manually on the ground. Each gun carries 235 rounds-approximately 10 seconds continuous firing.

The electrical ring-and-dot optical gunsight is mounted directly in front of your face. To operate the gunsight, place the gunsight breaker switch in the ON position and turn on the gunsight rheostat switch. A transparent green sunshield can be raised over the gunsight's reflector glass by a lever on the left side of the sight.

To fire, turn on the ALL GUN switch and the armament breaker switch, and squeeze the trigger on the forward part of the control stick. On all models except the N, the guns can be fired two at a time. From right to left, the inside breaker, switch controls the inboard guns; the middle switch controls the middle guns; and the end switch controls the outboard guns. On the P-40 N all six guns must be fired at once.

The P-40's gun camera is an N-2 or N-6 type mounted on the leading edge of the right landing gear fairing. To operate the camera on all models except N, turn the No. 4 breaker switch to ON and turn on the gun camera switch above the ignition switch. In the P-40 N, turn the No. 3 breaker switch to ON and turn on the ALLGUN switch. In the N, the camera is combined with the ALL-GUN switch. Normal loading for the gun camera-.is about 50 feet of film-approximately 15 seconds' shooting time.
