There are three generally accepted ways to bail out of a P-40 under control. Each of these methods has its advocates; each has proved successful. It is not the purpose of this manual to

tell you which of the three to choose. If the time ever comes, you'll decide in a hurry. Here are the procedures for all three -methods of bailing out:

1 The inverted method

a. Roll the canopy back and lock it. If you can't do that, jettison the canopy. Be sure you lean well forward if you jettison the canopy, so that it won't hit you on the head as it flies off.

b. Disconnect your headset and oxygen mask. Put -your goggles on.

c. Slow to 170 mph.

d. Trim the airplane nose heavy.

e. Roll the airplane over on its back.

f. Release safety belt and shoulder harness and push out with your hands and feet.
